La Liga: Atletico Madrid beats Real Madrid 2-1 to win the season's first derby

Madrid, Sept 20 (KUNA) -- Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid 2-1 on Sunday in the season's first El Clasico derby, in a match of the seventh round of the Spanish La Liga.

At the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium, defender Alejandro Grimaldo opened the scoring for the hosts with a successful penalty kick in the 53rd minute, while his teammate, Canadian forward Jonathan David, added the second goal in the 59th minute.

On the other side, Real Madrid played with 10 men from the 51st minute after defender Dean Huijsen was sent off with a straight red card, but they narrowed the gap through German defender Antonio Rüdiger in the 89th minute.

With this result, Atletico secured three points, bringing their total to 16 and taking second place from Real Madrid, who dropped to third in the overall standings with one point fewer. Barcelona leads the table with 21 points.

In another match of the same round, league leaders Barcelona defeated fifth-placed Sevilla 3-1 on Saturday at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium.
