Trump announces agreement with Denmark granting the United States "permanent control" over Greenland
Washington, Sept 18 (KUNA) -- U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday the conclusion of an agreement with Denmark granting the United States what he described as “permanent control” over security in Greenland, an island that had previously been under Danish sovereignty. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said, “I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland, granting the United States permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland.” He added that the agreement would “completely address” all U.S. concerns, noting that the United States “will not bear any cost” in return. He clarified that the United States would possess “forever” the full ability to take whatever is necessary in Greenland to secure and defend its security and that of the United States, while emphasizing that “no adversary of the United States will be able from now on to establish a base, maintain a military presence, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without our consent.” Trump expressed pride in reaching this decisive and highly significant agreement, “which no previous U.S. president has been able to achieve,” describing it as “a very important dream realized for the United States in a historic and distinctive event.” He also announced that the United States would “immediately” begin developing its military presence in Greenland and “will defend it with all its might,” affirming that his country looks forward to working with the peoples of Denmark and Greenland toward a “wonderful future.” Since assuming his second presidential term, President Trump had reaffirmed his intention to conclude a deal regarding ownership of the semi-autonomous island of Greenland, whether “by fair means or by force,” justifying his desire to annex Greenland by stating, “When we own it, we will defend it.
