Egypt emphasizes the centrality of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
Cairo, 18 Sep (KUNA) -- Egypt emphasized on Friday the centrality of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in the system of preserving and enhancing international peace and security since its adoption in 1968 to the present.
This was stated in a statement issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of the 70th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference overwhelmingly adopting Egypt’s annual resolution calling for the application of the IAEA’s comprehensive safeguards regime to all nuclear facilities in the Middle East. The resolution was supported by 112 countries, with no country voting against it.
The statement noted that the adoption of the resolution reflects Egypt’s weight within international organizations and the alignment of Egypt’s position with the objective of enhancing security and stability in the region. This is achieved by calling for the application of the IAEA’s safeguards regime to all Middle Eastern countries and their nuclear facilities without exception, working towards establishing a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the Middle East, and promoting the universality of the NPT.
It affirmed the necessity for the international community to fulfill its responsibilities and fully commit to implementing all legal obligations arising from the treaty, as well as intensifying international efforts to break the deadlock hindering the path towards establishing a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other WMD.
The statement pointed out that the convening of the seventh session of the United Nations Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, scheduled for November 2026 at the United Nations headquarters in New York, represents an available opportunity for all countries in the region to engage in serious and constructive dialogue and to accede to the NPT, thereby supporting efforts aimed at achieving the universality of the treaty and establishing a Middle East zone free of WMD.
