Egypt and Portugal reaffirm the importance of continuing joint cooperation frameworks in various fields
Cairo, Sept 17 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty and his Portuguese counterpart Paulo Rangel reaffirmed today, Thursday, their commitment to continuing to enhance bilateral cooperation across various fields and to broaden the strategic partnership between their two countries.
Abdelatty said in a joint press conference with his Portuguese counterpart at the conclusion of their talks in the new capital that relations between Cairo and Lisbon have witnessed notable development in recent times, highlighting the importance of holding the second session of the Supreme Joint Committee and agreeing to organize a Joint Business Council and a business forum to explore economic and trade opportunities between the two countries.
He clarified that the talks addressed cooperation in the petrochemicals, new and renewable energy, green hydrogen, tourism, water resources management, technology localization, and civilian applications of artificial intelligence sectors, as well as leveraging the strong presence of companies from both countries in Africa to enhance joint cooperation.
Regarding the Palestinian issue, Abdelatty said both sides agreed on the importance of implementing US President Donald Trump’s plan, delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, and achieving the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation from the Strip, expressing appreciation for Portugal’s positions, particularly its recognition of the State of Palestine and its support for the principles of international law.
He pointed out that both sides also agreed on the seriousness of the situation in the West Bank resulting from the violent and intimidating actions carried out by settlers against unarmed civilians, aimed at Judaizing the West Bank and displacing its population.
He noted that the Egyptian and Portuguese sides discussed the crisis concerning Iran and the situations in Libya, Syria, Lebanon, and Sudan, emphasizing the importance of reaching political settlements for these crises and preserving the national unity of these states.
For his part, Rangel stressed the importance of relations between his country and Egypt and cooperation between them in Africa, pointing out the agreement to hold the Egyptian-Portuguese Joint Committee in early 2027, alongside convening an economic forum and a joint business council to enhance economic relations between the two countries.
He affirmed his country’s support for multilateralism and the application of international law to achieve peace and enhance security, expressing concern over the situation in Palestine. (End) A.S.M / A.S
