Moscow, Sept 17 (KUNA) -- The Russian presidency (the Kremlin) confirmed on Thursday that the imposition of new U.S. sanctions on Russia would “hinder” efforts to reach a peaceful settlement to the conflict in Ukraine, adding that Moscow is closely monitoring developments related to the new U.S. sanctions bill.
In a press briefing, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, “Moscow is monitoring the situation regarding the U.S. bill imposing additional sanctions on Russia,” noting that “taking such measures would affect the conditions surrounding diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict.” Peskov added that “Moscow considers the new U.S. measures to be of an hostile nature,” emphasizing that “sanctions do not contribute to creating a favorable atmosphere for dialogue at a time when communications continue regarding the possibility of resuming negotiations on Ukraine.”
Peskov’s comments came a day after the U.S. House of Representatives approved a broad bill to tighten sanctions on Russia and Iran by a vote of 262 in favor to 159 against, following its passage in the Senate. The bill will now be sent to U.S. President Donald Trump for consideration of his signature.
The bill includes measures targeting key Russian sectors, including energy and the financial sector, and allows for the imposition of tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries that continue to purchase Russian energy sources.
In this context, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the passage of the U.S. bill, viewing the new sanctions as a tool to pressure Russia. This comes as Ukraine experienced Russian missile and drone attacks on Thursday that injured more than 20 people and caused damage in several regions. (End) Dan / A.M.S.
