Berlin, Sept 17 (KUNA) -- The German automobile club ADAC announced on Thursday that fuel prices in Germany have reached new record highs amid the repercussions of tensions in the Middle East and growing concerns about oil supplies. In a statement, the club said the average price of diesel reached approximately 2.44 euros (2.80 dollars) per liter, surpassing the previous peak, while gasoline prices stood at around 2.31 euros (2.65 dollars) per liter. It added that fuel prices have risen significantly since the outbreak of the war with Iran, imposing heavier financial burdens on drivers, households, and businesses, particularly transport companies facing sharp increases in operating costs. The club noted that calls for government intervention to alleviate the burden on consumers and affected sectors are mounting as prices continue to rise, following German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s commitment yesterday to take measures to mitigate the impact of rising prices on consumers and businesses. It clarified that among the measures under consideration by the German government, starting next October, are reducing the value-added tax on fuel or providing direct financial assistance to drivers and companies. It is worth noting that crude oil prices are the most important factor in determining fuel prices, although prices vary significantly between regions, gas stations, and even throughout the day. Fuel prices in Germany are the highest in the European Union compared to other European countries. (End) A.N.J. / F.L.A.
