Washington, Sept 16 (KUNA) – The U.S. House of Representatives approved by majority vote on Wednesday a bill imposing a broad package of stringent sanctions on Russia due to its ongoing war against Ukraine, and sent it to President Donald Trump for signature. The bill, originally introduced more than a year ago by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and backed by both parties, aims to target the Russian economy and punish Moscow for its continued war against Ukraine. The legislation grants President Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries including China and India, two of the top five buyers of Russian crude oil and gas, as oil sales revenues are vital to financing Russia’s war effort in Ukraine. The bill, which passed with 262 votes in favor and 159 against, imposes sanctions on Russian leaders, officials, and financial institutions, and expands sanctions on Iran. Last month, senators overwhelmingly approved the bill with 86 votes in favor and 11 against, with strong bipartisan support despite opposition from some Democrats who argued it would grant President Trump additional tariff-related powers.
