Arab League Secretary-General condemns attempt to target Mecca and affirms solidarity with Saudi Arabia

Cairo, 16 Sep (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy condemned on Wednesday the attempt to target Makkah Al-Mukarramah with a drone, affirming the League's solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its support in protecting its territory, security, and the sanctity of Islamic holy sites.

In a statement, Fahmy stated that any threat to the security of Makkah Al-Mukarramah and the sanctity of Islamic holy sites is of utmost gravity, noting the Saudi authorities' announcement that they intercepted and destroyed the drone south of Makkah Al-Mukarramah before it entered the restricted airspace of the Holy Capital.

He added that such acts threaten the Kingdom's security and the safety of citizens, residents, and pilgrims to the House of God, while also constituting a provocation to the sentiments of Muslims worldwide.

Fahmy considered the targeting attempt part of a continuous escalation by the Houthi militia, which in recent days has included attacks on Saudi territory, facilities, and civilian landmarks, thereby exacerbating regional tensions and threatening the security and stability of the region.

He called for a halt to the aggressions, respect for the rules of international law and the UN Charter, and compliance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216 of 2015, which calls on the Houthis to refrain from provocations and threats against neighboring states.

He reaffirmed that the security and stability of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are a fundamental pillar of regional security and stability, praising the efficiency and vigilance of the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces in thwarting the targeting attempt.
