German Chancellor and Iraqi Prime Minister Discuss Enhancing Cooperation and Latest Regional Developments

Berlin, September 15 (KUNA) -- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Obaidi discussed on Tuesday ways to strengthen bilateral relations and economic and security cooperation, alongside developments in the Middle East region. In a joint press conference following his meeting with Al-Obaidi, Merz praised Germany’s ties with Iraq and the activities of German companies there, noting that Baghdad has taken important steps in combating corruption and strengthening state institutions. He expressed Germany’s readiness to continue cooperating with Iraq in the security and military fields amid the challenges facing the region. Regarding the war involving Iran and tensions in the Middle East, Merz called for an end to the closure of the vital strait, stating that it represents a crucial passage for global trade and energy supplies. For his part, Al-Obaidi affirmed that Iraq views Germany as a reliable partner, highlighting Baghdad’s desire to expand economic cooperation and benefit from German expertise and technology. He said Iraq also seeks to strengthen its relations with European countries and diversify its economic partnerships, including working to export crude oil to Germany and purchase German equipment and technologies. The talks also addressed the repercussions of the war in the region, energy security, and freedom of navigation, particularly amid tensions related to the Strait of Hormuz. Merz’s meeting with Al-Obaidi takes place within the framework of the Iraqi prime minister’s official visit to Germany, part of Baghdad’s efforts to enhance its relations with Europe and expand political, economic, and security cooperation with Germany.
