Arab League stresses importance of enhancing Arab integration in the electricity sector to ensure energy security
Cairo, Sept 13 (KUNA) -- The Arab League stressed today the importance of enhancing Arab integration in the fields of electricity, renewable energy, and energy efficiency to ensure energy security and achieve sustainable economic development in member states. This was stated in a speech by Ali Al-Maliki, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Affairs at the Arab League, at the conclusion of the seventh joint meeting of the Committee of Experts on Electricity and the Committee of Experts on Renewable Energy in Arab countries, according to a statement issued by the League.
Al-Maliki said that the next phase requires strengthening partnerships with the private sector and regional and international organizations, leveraging technological advancements and innovation, and building capacities to enhance the ability of the Arab countries’ electricity and renewable energy sectors to keep pace with rapid transformations and support opportunities for achieving Arab economic integration in this field.
He called for utilizing the available potentials in Arab countries to update the Arab Sustainable Energy Strategy, thereby contributing to improving the efficiency of the electricity and renewable energy systems and opening broader horizons for Arab cooperation in this sector.
According to the statement, the meeting adopted the revised internal regulations of the Arab Ministers Council for Electricity, paving the way for their presentation to the next session of the Council for approval. It also discussed ways to finance the update of the Arab Sustainable Energy Strategy.
Regarding the clean hydrogen economy, considered one of the most important energy carriers in the future, participants emphasized the importance of establishing a clean hydrogen network to coordinate Arab efforts in utilizing clean hydrogen technologies, operating under the umbrella of the Arab Ministers Council for Electricity.
In the context of enhancing regional and international cooperation, the meeting approved holding the eighth Arab-China Energy Cooperation Conference in one of the Arab countries during 2027, and prepared for the third Arab-India Energy Cooperation Forum, with one Arab country nominated to host it.
Participants also reviewed the ongoing preparations for convening the sixth Arab Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Forum in Libya.
The meeting’s convening comes within the framework of continuing Arab efforts to enhance cooperation and integration in the fields of electricity, renewable energy, and energy efficiency, and to accelerate joint Arab action to address the challenges facing the energy sector in the Arab region.
