Kuwaiti Professor: Leadership Award Embodies Kuwait's Scientific and Research Achievements in the Region

Kuwait City, September 13 (KUNA) – Professor Musa Khorshid, a faculty member in the Department of Surgery at the College of Medicine, Kuwait University, and former surgical consultant at Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital, affirmed that the Leadership Award he recently received from the World Federation for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in Canada embodies the scientific and research contributions and achievements made by Kuwait in the region.

In a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Sunday, Khorshid explained that this international recognition was based on continuous efforts since the mid-1990s to perform complex surgeries and conduct specialized research, which established Kuwait as one of the first countries to introduce modern technologies in bariatric surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, and advanced endoscopy.

He noted that medicine in Kuwait has witnessed significant development since the initiation of advanced endoscopic surgeries in 1995, extending to the expansion of various types of bariatric procedures, such as sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and adjustable gastric banding.

Furthermore, Khorshid highlighted that Kuwait has been a regional pioneer in keeping pace with the latest medical technologies. In 2017, the country became the first in the region to perform oral gastroplasty (transoral robotic surgery), thereby establishing itself as a leading center in this specialty.

He added that the medical sector in the country is moving forward with expanding robotic bariatric surgeries, commending the Ministry of Health’s efforts to provide modern robotic equipment across all government hospitals. This initiative represents a qualitative leap that opens up broad opportunities for medical education and tele-surgery, while keeping pace with global advancements in rapid data transmission and modern surgical technologies.
