Cairo, Sept 13 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy reaffirmed on Sunday the League’s rejection of any arrangements that would entrench division and create parallel entities in Sudan, reiterating the importance of preserving the country’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as its national institutions. The Arab League said in a statement that this position was expressed during talks between Fahmy and the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Representative to Sudan, Pika Haviisto, which covered developments in Sudan, the outcomes of the Five-Party Mechanism’s visit to Khartoum this week, and ways to support peace and stability efforts. Fahmy underscored the Arab League’s support for the Sudanese people and their legitimate aspirations for security, peace, and sustainable development, noting that the immediate priority is to halt hostilities, protect civilians, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, alongside launching an exclusively Sudanese political process. He stressed that resolving the Sudanese crisis requires parallel action on political, humanitarian, and military tracks, and emphasized the need to prevent any external interference in Sudan’s internal affairs and to launch a comprehensive, Sudan-led political process that ensures the participation of all segments of Sudanese society. According to the statement, the talks addressed efforts to end the war through reaching a humanitarian ceasefire that would pave the way for a permanent cessation of hostilities and safeguard Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He added that the UN envoy outlined United Nations efforts, in coordination with the Arab League and other members of the Five-Party Mechanism, to support initiatives aimed at closing the chapter on war and ending the conflict in Sudan. The Five-Party Mechanism comprises the Arab League, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the European Union, and the United Nations. (End) MM/NS
