(Daily Migration): Over 76,000 displaced as conflict intensifies in Yemen

Geneva, September 12 (KUNA) -- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) warned today, Saturday, of a rapidly worsening displacement crisis in Yemen amid escalating conflict, recording the displacement of more than 76,000 people since July last year, including approximately 46,000 who were displaced in recent days.

In a statement issued from Geneva, the organization confirmed that around 50,000 people had been displaced from Taiz governorate, and another 17,000 from Lahij governorate.

The statement quoted IOM Director General Amy Pope as saying that the widening scope of the conflict is making it more difficult to deliver “life-saving humanitarian aid to those in need,” calling for guaranteed safe and unhindered access for humanitarian workers.

Pope called for the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel, and for ensuring the safety of supplies, vehicles, and facilities relied upon by the organization to deliver aid.

According to the statement, the IOM warned that the humanitarian situation in Yemen is deteriorating day by day, with an expected rise in the number of displaced persons in the coming days.

It urged the international community to urgently intensify its support for Yemen, warning that continued deterioration of the situation will deepen the humanitarian crisis. (End) A.M.Kh / M.A.H.A
