Indian Prime Minister and Chinese President discuss bilateral, regional, and international issues on the sidelines of the BRICS summit
New Delhi, Sept 12 (KUNA) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi. The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Modi and Xi welcomed the steady progress in bilateral relations between India and China since their last meeting in Tianjin in August 2025. The statement noted that they reiterated the need for both countries to adopt a long-term strategic perspective for their relations and to ensure that differences do not escalate into conflicts. Modi stressed that both sides should be guided by three mutual principles: mutual respect, consideration of each other’s sensitivities, and mutual interests. He also emphasized that peace and stability in border areas remain a cornerstone for continuing to develop bilateral relations, underlining the need for both sides to abide by existing agreements and understandings on border-related issues. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to reaching a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution to the border issue, based on the political perspective of their comprehensive bilateral relations and the long-term interests of both peoples. They reviewed the progress made in people-to-people ties and stressed the need to enhance cultural exchanges, trade links, and mobility between the two countries. On economic and trade relations, they underscored the need to address each side’s concerns, including structural imbalances in the trade balance, supply chain issues, and facilitating effective, stable, and predictable market access. They agreed on the need to continue expanding areas of consensus between the two sides on regional and global issues and to address common challenges.
