United Nations marks 25th anniversary of September 11 attacks, reaffirms commitment to counter-terrorism

New York, September 11 (KUNA) -- The United Nations marked the 25th anniversary of the attacks that took place in the United States on September 11, 2001, reaffirming its solidarity with the families of the victims and survivors, and all those whose lives were affected by those attacks. In a press statement on Thursday evening, UN Spokesman Farhan Haq said that “the terrorist and abhorrent attacks constituted an assault on humanity itself,” resulting in the deaths of thousands of people and leaving a profound impact on the world. He added that on this occasion, the United Nations remembers approximately 3,000 victims from the United States and more than 90 countries, standing alongside their families and loved ones. He praised the survivors and first responders for demonstrating “extraordinary courage and humanity,” noting that many of them sacrificed their lives to save others. He reaffirmed the UN’s solidarity with the residents of New York City, the people of the United States, and all individuals whose lives were affected by the attacks. The UN official pointed out that this year also marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption by Member States of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, serving as a reminder that the fight against terrorism “is a shared mission that is not yet complete.” On this occasion, the United Nations called for renewing a collective commitment to building a future free from terrorism, coinciding with the commemoration of the victims of the September 11 attacks.
