Arab League Secretary-General condemns Iranian attack on Jordan and warns against sliding into an open war

Cairo, Sept 9 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy condemned on Wednesday Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Jordan, warning of the consequences of the region sliding into an open war. In a statement, Fahmy said, “Iran’s continued escalation against Gulf states and several Arab countries could push the entire region toward a war that would undermine any diplomatic efforts to contain the escalation through negotiation.” He added that Iran’s continued reckless behavior and its pursuit of expanding conflict fronts would entrench hostilities with neighboring Arab states for decades to come, in addition to having dangerous repercussions for the regional security architecture. He stressed that the security and stability of the Arab Gulf states and Jordan constitute an inseparable part of Arab national security, calling on Iran to abandon its hostile policy toward Arab countries and to adhere to the principles of good neighborliness and relevant international charters. He reaffirmed the League’s full solidarity with Jordan and its steadfast support for Jordan, as well as its backing of all measures taken by Jordan to safeguard its sovereignty and preserve its security and stability.
