Iraqi Judiciary: Foreign ISIS Terrorist Group Members to Be Handled in Accordance with Bilateral Agreements with Their Countries

Baghdad, September 9 (KUNA) – The Iraqi Higher Judicial Council said on Wednesday that it would handle foreign detainees and convicts, who are members of the ISIS terrorist group and have been transferred from Syria to Iraq, in accordance with bilateral agreements with their home countries.

In a statement, the Council noted that its Chairman, Judge Faiz Zidan, presided over a meeting on the matter, which resulted in a unified approach regarding these individuals after their referral to the courts. This approach involves processing their cases in line with bilateral agreements and understandings between Iraq and the countries to which they belong.

He emphasized that the handling of these cases would be based on Iraqi laws and the principle of reciprocity, with the National Center for International Judicial Cooperation tasked with examining any initiatives or offers submitted by those countries or international organizations regarding assistance and support to Iraq in this regard.

The Council had previously announced on September 1 the completion of the interrogation phase in the case of 5,704 accused members of the terrorist group who were transferred from northeastern Syria to Iraq, and their referral to the competent courts according to the evidence and facts established in each case.
