OIC Condemns Nauru's Opening of an Embassy in Occupied Jerusalem

Jeddah, September 9 (KUNA) -- The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) strongly condemned on Wednesday the decision by the Republic of Nauru, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, to open an embassy in the occupied city of Jerusalem, an act that contradicts the international position regarding the legal and historical status of the city.

In a statement, the OIC General Secretariat stressed that the holy city of Jerusalem constitutes an inseparable part of the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967, and that this move is null and void and unlawful under international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, particularly United Nations Security Council resolutions 476 and 478 of 1980.

It renewed its call on the government of Nauru and on states that have transferred or announced their intention to open embassies in occupied Jerusalem to reverse this unlawful decision and contribute to international efforts aimed at achieving peace based on the two-state solution vision, in accordance with relevant resolutions of international legitimacy.

It is worth noting that Nauru is a small island nation located in the Pacific Ocean and is the third-smallest country by area, after Vatican City and Monaco, with a total area of 21 square kilometers and a population of approximately 12,000 people. (End) F.N./A.M.S.
