German Chancellor warns of consequences of implementing deportation policy by far-right Alternative party

Berlin, Sept 9 (KUNA) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned today, Wednesday, of the “serious repercussions” of implementing the immigration policy advocated by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, emphasizing the negative impact of a so-called “reverse migration” policy on the German economy.

Speaking before the German parliament (Bundestag), Merz noted that broad sectors of the economy rely on millions of workers of migrant origin, pointing out, for example, that the crafts sector employs a large number of them. He added that enforcing the deportation policy promoted by the AfD would lead to highly dangerous consequences, stating that the crafts sector would then be unable to continue operations and that it would be “extremely difficult” to staff nursing homes, hospitals, and restaurants.

The German chancellor considered this proposal one of the factors deepening divisions within society, while noting that his government intends to increase the deportation of individuals who do not have a permanent right to reside in Germany.

Far-right groups use the term “reverse migration” to call for the departure of large numbers of people of foreign origin from the country. The AfD also uses the term, but its official statements clarify that the intention is not to target German citizens, but rather foreigners who are legally required to leave the country.
