German Chancellor Reaffirms His Country's Support for Ukraine in Its War Against Russia

Berlin, Sept 9 (KUNA) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reaffirmed on Wednesday his government’s commitment to continuing support for Ukraine in its war against Russia. This came during Merz’s participation in a plenary session of the Bundestag (Federal Parliament), where he engaged in a sharp political confrontation with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and its leader, Alice Weidel, over the party’s stance on the Russian war against Ukraine. Weidel had previously urged him, in a speech before the legislature, to initiate peace negotiations that would bring an end to the conflict that has been ongoing since February 2022. Merz accused the AfD of presenting a distorted picture of the conflict, stating that the party “clearly stands with the Russian government in this war.” He added that the disagreement between his government and the AfD extends beyond policies toward Russia and Ukraine to encompass broader foreign and European policy.
