Arab League Secretary-General welcomes Britain's decision to ban trade in goods from Israeli settlements

Cairo, Sept 9 (KUNA) – Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy welcomed on Wednesday Britain’s decision to ban trade in goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as the intention of 11 other countries to take similar steps. In a statement, Fahmy considered these measures a step in the right direction to confront the illegal Israeli settlement system and restore a policy of accountability, refusing to turn a blind eye to the practices of the occupying government. He stressed that concrete and practical measures against the settlement system, which aims to undermine the two-state solution, reflect the awareness of all parties of the seriousness of the ongoing developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, including the apartheid system established by the Israeli occupation and its unleashing of settlers’ violence against unarmed Palestinian civilians. Fahmy called on all countries that still believe in international law and in the two-state solution as the only means to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to join the position taken by the United Kingdom, a stance clearly expressed by the 11 countries. He affirmed that concrete and practical measures against the racist settlement system would compel the Israeli occupation to consider the cost of its illegal practices after years of impunity and lack of accountability and punishment.
