Russian Defense Minister Emphasizes Importance of Russia's Relations with Tajikistan for the Security and Stability of Central Asia
Moscow, Sept 8 (KUNA) -- Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov announced on Tuesday the readiness of the Russian military base in Tajikistan to confront external challenges and threats, affirming that the alliance ties between the two countries will remain a solid foundation for peace, security, and stability in Central Asia.
Belousov made these remarks during a reception held in the Russian capital, Moscow, to mark the 35th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Tajikistan, addressing prospects for Russian-Tajik cooperation in military and security fields.
The Russian defense minister emphasized that Moscow attaches special importance to developing military cooperation with Tajikistan, pointing to joint activities in operational and combat training, as well as the exchange of expertise, alongside cooperation in forming aviation, drone, and special forces units within the Tajik Armed Forces.
Belousov stated that cooperation between the two countries also includes strengthening the security of the Tajik-Afghan border, which is considered a priority file within the framework of security cooperation between Moscow and Dushanbe. He added that the Tajik Armed Forces possess the necessary capabilities to protect the country’s interests and sovereignty, affirming the Russian side’s readiness to continue providing support and cooperation in military and security areas.
The Russian military base (201) in Tajikistan is one of the key pillars of Russia’s military presence in Central Asia. Its units are stationed in the cities of Dushanbe and Khorugh and comprise formations of ground forces, air defense, artillery, reconnaissance, and communications.
The base holds strategic importance for Russia due to Tajikistan’s location bordering Afghanistan. It forms part of the Russian-Tajik security cooperation system, with its forces participating in joint training and exercises aimed at enhancing readiness and strengthening the capacity to confront potential threats.
Russia and Tajikistan are linked by alliance and strategic partnership relations, with the (201) military base being one of the most prominent manifestations of defense cooperation between the two countries, alongside collaboration within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and joint military exercises.
