Arab League condemns Nauru's opening of an embassy in occupied Jerusalem
Cairo, Sept 8 (KUNA) – The Arab League strongly condemned on Tuesday the opening by the Republic of Nauru, located in the Pacific Ocean, of an embassy in occupied Jerusalem, affirming that this constitutes a blatant violation of international law and resolutions of international legitimacy. In a statement, the League said that this step contradicts the firm international position regarding the legal and historical status of Jerusalem, particularly in light of international resolutions 476 and 478, which affirmed non-recognition of Israeli occupation measures aimed at altering the character and legal status of the city, and the withdrawal of diplomatic missions from it.
The League stressed that opening an embassy in occupied Jerusalem does not change the city’s legal status, nor does it create any legal right or status for the occupation, nor does it affect the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among which is their right to establish their independent state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
It warned against the dangers of such steps, which encourage the occupation authorities to continue their policies aimed at entrenching facts on the ground, imposing illegal control over Jerusalem, and undermining prospects for achieving peace based on the two-state solution, while harming international efforts to end the occupation and realize an independent Palestinian state.
The League called on the Republic of Nauru to review its decision and comply with United Nations resolutions and international law. It also called on all countries to refrain from taking steps that would support or entrench the Israeli occupation or undermine the legal status of Jerusalem, and to uphold their responsibilities in safeguarding the principles of international law and resolutions of international legitimacy.
It reaffirmed that East Jerusalem is an inseparable part of the occupied Palestinian territory since 1967, and that any measures or practices aimed at altering the character, legal status, or demographic composition of the city cannot create a new legal reality. It emphasized that achieving a just and comprehensive peace remains contingent upon ending the Israeli occupation and realizing the independence of the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital.
