Egyptian-Greek-Cypriot Summit Affirms Support for Stability, De-escalation, and Enhanced Cooperation
Cairo, Sept 8 (KUNA) -- The leaders of Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus affirmed today their consensus on supporting regional stability, de-escalating tensions, and continuing political coordination, as well as enhancing trilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, security, and investment.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, speaking at a joint press conference with his Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis following a summit held in the Egyptian city of Alamein, stated that the three countries discussed mechanisms to elevate political coordination and economic and trade cooperation. President al-Sisi emphasized the importance of continuing to implement their shared approach to supporting peace and increasing the effectiveness of joint projects to deliver tangible results for their peoples and the region.
He noted that energy is at the forefront of cooperation among the three countries, highlighting the importance of developing electricity interconnection projects, foremost among them the "GRIEGE" project with Greece, which would enhance regional integration in clean energy between the two shores of the Mediterranean and onward to Europe. He clarified that strategic cooperation in the natural gas sector with Cyprus represents a promising field, with Egypt looking to transfer gas to its infrastructure and re-export it to European markets, thereby enhancing energy security at both the regional and international levels and delivering shared economic benefits.
Al-Sisi added that the talks also covered the development of investment cooperation in several vital sectors, including information technology, tourism, industry, health, education, and construction, aiming to strengthen partnerships between the private sector and the chambers of commerce and industry in the three countries. He stressed that the trilateral partnership is not limited to political, economic, and cultural cooperation, but also includes security and military coordination to address common challenges, foremost among them terrorism, organized crime, and irregular migration.
He further emphasized that stability and security must be based on adherence to the rules of international law, support for national institutions, respect for state sovereignty, and prioritizing dialogue and political settlement in the face of crises and challenges.
On regional issues, al-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s position calling for de-escalation and the prioritization of political solutions to prevent the region from sliding into a wider circle of conflict, affirming his country’s rejection of any attempts to undermine the stability of brotherly Arab states and its full support for them.
Regarding the Palestinian issue, the Egyptian president reaffirmed the necessity of adhering to the implementation of the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement’s provisions for a ceasefire, as well as US President Donald Trump’s comprehensive plan, and ensuring full and sustainable access for humanitarian aid. He renewed Egypt’s complete rejection of any attempts aimed at displacing the Palestinian people, altering the demographic composition of Palestinian lands, or partitioning them, affirming that just and comprehensive peace in the region can only be achieved through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
On Libya, al-Sisi stressed the importance of holding presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously, respecting the role of national institutions, ending divisions, and ensuring the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries from the country to preserve Libya’s unity and sovereignty.
Regarding Syria, he pointed out the consensus among Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece on the necessity of preserving the unity of the Syrian state and the integrity of its territory, rejecting any attempts to divide it, and pushing for a comprehensive political process that fulfills the aspirations of the Syrian people.
On Sudan, the Horn of Africa, and the Red Sea, al-Sisi affirmed that comprehensive political settlements based on national dialogue and respect for the will of peoples, free from military interventions, represent the only way to end the region’s crises.
For their part, the Cypriot president and the Greek prime minister affirmed their commitment to enhancing trilateral cooperation to achieve the interests of the three countries and their peoples, and to consolidate peace and the foundations of regional security. They praised the Alamein International Air and Space Show 2026, whose activities launched in the presence of the three leaders.
The trilateral summit discussed ways to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, energy, tourism, education, culture, migration, labor, and the transfer of skilled Egyptian labor to Greece and Cyprus, as well as security cooperation to combat irregular migration and organized crime.
The summit reviewed recent developments on regional and international issues and the repercussions of regional tensions on global trade and energy security, reaffirming the continuation of consultation and political coordination to support stability in the region. They also emphasized the importance of the positive developments in Egyptian-European Union relations across various fields, under the implementation of the Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership Agreement signed between Egypt and the EU in 2024.
The three leaders agreed that the experience of cooperation between Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus has proven the existence of a shared will to build a regional model based on achieving stability and development, and offering practical solutions to contain circles of tension, while continuing to develop the trilateral cooperation framework and its mechanisms to meet the aspirations of the peoples of the three countries for a safer, more stable, and more prosperous future.
