(Kremlin): Russian and US presidents discuss ways to resolve the Ukrainian conflict over the phone
Moscow, Sept 8 (KUNA) -- The Russian presidency (the Kremlin) announced on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart, Donald Trump, discussed ways to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, along with a number of “humanitarian” issues and bilateral relations, during a phone call.
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, in a press briefing following the roughly hour-long call, described the talks between Presidents Putin and Trump as “constructive and very frank,” noting that they focused primarily on ways to settle the Ukraine conflict. He pointed out that the two leaders agreed to maintain their communications and to reconnect as needed.
Ushakov explained that Putin provided Trump with an assessment of developments on the battlefield and Russia’s view on the course and objectives of the military operation. The two presidents also exchanged views on the outcomes of visits by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to Moscow and Kyiv, noting that both sides gave a positive evaluation of the results of those visits.
He added that Trump emphasized during the talks his interest in achieving a breakthrough in the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict during his presidency, stressing the necessity of ending the conflict, which he believed would open prospects for restoring relations between the United States and Russia.
Ushakov noted that Putin, for his part, affirmed his support for Trump’s commitment to building a productive partnership between Moscow and Washington. He said the Russian president stressed that his country has no “aggressive” plans toward Europe and no intention of carrying out “hostile” actions against European countries.
On the “humanitarian” front, the Russian presidential aide said that Putin and Trump agreed to continue working on “humanitarian” issues, including the “exchange of detainees and sentenced persons.” He added that Putin praised the efforts of First Lady Melania Trump aimed at reuniting Russian and Ukrainian children with their families.
Ushakov pointed out that the conversation also included a “comprehensive and objective” assessment of developments related to the Russian military operation in Ukraine, emphasizing that the call was characterized by a “positive” atmosphere. (End) D.A.N. / M.A.A.
