UNSMIL reaffirms commitment to continue working with Libyan stakeholders to complete the roadmap

Tunis, Sept 7 (KUNA) -- The UN Special Representative to Libya, Hanna Titeh, reaffirmed on Monday the commitment of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to continue working with all relevant parties in Libya to advance the political process and complete the remaining stages of the roadmap for resolving the country’s political crisis.

In a statement, UNSMIL said Titeh’s position was expressed during her meeting with Omar Boushah, Second Deputy Chairman of the Higher State Council, as part of ongoing consultations aimed at resolving Libya’s political crisis. She also reaffirmed the mission’s commitment to continuing its work with Libyan authorities, supporting their efforts to achieve stability, and creating conducive conditions for credible national elections.

The two sides discussed the current political, security, and economic developments in Libya.

The meeting follows UNSMIL’s announcement last Thursday that it had transmitted the electoral agreement, signed a few days earlier by the Mini-Dialogue Committee (4+4), to both the House of Representatives and the Higher State Council, granting them one month to approve it.

The agreement stipulates that legislative and presidential elections be held under a single executive authority and unified national institutions within a period not exceeding 24 months, and that the National Elections Commission be reconstituted.

The UN mission is making efforts to end the conflict between the two governments: the Government of National Unity, based in Tripoli and controlling western Libya, and the other, mandated by the House of Representatives in early 2022, based in Benghazi and controlling eastern Libya and most of the southern regions.
