Britain confirms it is about to announce "comprehensive measures" in response to settlement expansion in the West Bank

London, Sept 7 (KUNA) -- British Prime Minister Andy Burnham affirmed on Monday that his country is preparing to announce a series of “comprehensive measures” in response to the illegal expansion of Israeli occupation settlements in the West Bank. The British government stated in a press release that phone discussions between Burnham and Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, focused on the latest developments in the situation in Palestine, recent developments in the Middle East, and bilateral relations between London and Doha. Burnham clarified that the expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank is “unacceptable,” noting that the United Kingdom is set to announce a package of “comprehensive measures” in due course in response to the settlement expansion. He also addressed developments in the Middle East, emphasizing that his current focus is on ensuring de-escalation and supporting regional partners in achieving stability and security. Burnham expressed his hope to strengthen British-Qatari relations and deepen cooperation in defense and security, as well as in business, investment, and clean energy. Furthermore, according to the statement, the Prime Minister held two phone calls with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, with discussions centering on expanding cooperation between the United Kingdom and both Cyprus and Sweden across various fields. The talks also covered a number of regional and international issues of importance, including efforts aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the war in Ukraine, and several other files.
