Tunisia calls for Arab unity of position amid regional security challenges

Cairo, Sept 5 (KUNA) -- Tunisia called on Saturday for preserving a unified Arab stance and enhancing joint Arab action during this delicate phase in which the region faces unprecedented security and political challenges. This was stated in a speech delivered by Hashemi al-Ajili, Director of Organizations at the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the handover of Tunisia’s presidency of the 166th ordinary session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the level of Permanent Representatives, whose meetings began earlier today.

Al-Ajili said that Tunisia assumes the presidency of the session amid a delicate and sensitive regional context, with growing challenges facing the region. He affirmed that Tunisia would work during the session in a spirit of consensus and openness, guided by its fundamental principles and initial positions, foremost among which is its steadfast and unconditional support for the just Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people’s right to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

He also reaffirmed Tunisia’s commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arab states, as well as strengthening Arab solidarity and unity of ranks, in a manner that serves the security and stability of the region. He noted Tunisia’s keenness to contribute to developing the framework of joint Arab action and updating the mechanisms of the League of Arab States to respond to the aspirations of Arab peoples.

Al-Ajili expressed hope that the draft resolutions presented to the session would serve as an opportunity to strengthen common Arab positions and discuss them in a constructive spirit, enabling the achievement of consensus-based formulations that reflect shared priorities.

During the opening session of the meeting of Permanent Representatives, the presidency of the session was handed over from the Kingdom of Bahrain, represented by Ambassador Fawziya bint Abdullah al-Zinal, Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States, to the representative of the Tunisian Republic.
