British Prime Minister and French President discuss migration, Europe, Ukraine, and the Middle East

London, Sept 3 (KUNA) -- British Prime Minister Andy Burnham discussed with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday issues of irregular migration, Europe, and Ukraine, as well as developments in the Middle East. The British Prime Minister’s Office conveyed in a statement that Burnham emphasized that cooperation between the United Kingdom and France has become clearly fruitful, with operational teams making significant progress in reducing the number of irregular migrants and curbing crossing attempts. He clarified that both sides agreed on the necessity of ensuring this success is replicated across Europe to deter irregular migration.

The statement noted that the talks also addressed the UK’s efforts to draw closer to Europe, with the Prime Minister highlighting the significant challenges posed by the “Made in Europe” program to British industry and the need for joint efforts to find ways to move forward and protect shared interests.

Regarding Ukraine, the statement said that Burnham and Macron discussed next steps on establishing local assembly lines in Ukraine for the long-range Scalp missile, which uses British technology. They also welcomed the successful meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Kyiv last week.

On another note, the two sides discussed developments in the Middle East, including the need to ensure de-escalation in the Strait of Hormuz. The Prime Minister pointed to Israel’s recent move regarding the E1 settlement, stressing that it is “unacceptable and only serves to undermine the prospects of a two-state solution.”
