Cairo, Sept 3 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy called on Thursday for elevating the level of joint Arab cooperation and focusing on implementation and results amid successive international and regional developments, thereby enhancing the ability of Arab countries to confront challenges and realize the aspirations of their peoples.

Speaking at the opening session of the 118th regular session of the Economic and Social Council at the ministerial level, Fahmy stated that this stage demands genuine solidarity and efforts toward implementation and achieving results, noting that there are priorities that must be emphasized within the Council’s work. He added that these priorities center on economic, social, and developmental fields in the coming period, emphasizing that these areas lie at the core of the Economic and Social Council’s mandate as one of the main supervisory and executive bodies within the Arab League system.

He clarified that the first priority is to develop an Arab model for comprehensive development that respects the specificities of Arab societies, leverages human and natural resources, and promotes sustainable development across its economic, social, and environmental dimensions.

He affirmed that the second priority is to support the Palestinian people and provide the conditions for a decent and secure life by developing effective implementation mechanisms to deliver Arab support to the Palestinian economy, thereby contributing to enabling the Palestinian people to reclaim their legitimate rights and establish their independent state.

He pointed to the third priority, which involves supporting Arab countries facing unstable conditions and difficulties in achieving economic and social stability through joint, actionable mechanisms that respond to their economic, social, and developmental needs.

He stressed that activating Arab food security strategies represents the fourth priority, as it constitutes a fundamental pillar of Arab national security, highlighting the importance of transforming existing strategies and plans into executable programs and projects that yield tangible and complementary results.

He noted that the fifth priority includes developing the education system across all its dimensions, including basic, university, vocational, and digital education, while ensuring adequate protection for children in conflict zones and working to save generations deprived of educational opportunities by wars. He considered investment in future generations as the key to building a secure and prosperous future, emphasizing the necessity of treating education as a central axis in the path of Arab development.

Regarding the health sector, Fahmy stated that the sixth priority is to develop the health system and enhance its capacity to confront structural and operational challenges, particularly in countries affected by instability, and to strengthen preparedness for dealing with emerging global health crises.

He also pointed to the seventh priority, which involves responding to the needs of youth and effectively involving them in building their societies, noting the importance of keeping pace with artificial intelligence and digital transformation, and addressing the ethical, social, and security challenges posed by the digital space, as well as cyber threats.

He continued that the eighth priority is to enhance Arab capacities to deal with climate change and its economic, social, and developmental repercussions, and to develop the ability of Arab countries to confront these challenges.

He called for serious engagement with migration and displacement issues as the ninth priority, aiming to achieve greater social stability, support host communities and the most vulnerable groups, and contribute to reaching sustainable solutions.

He pointed to the tenth priority, which is to develop the work of specialized Arab organizations and executive ministerial councils as think tanks and executive arms of the League of Arab States system, thereby achieving integration of Arab efforts and contributing to transforming decisions into tangible programs and results. He also affirmed that Arab countries possess constructive plans and strategies, but the challenge in the coming phase lies in implementation, follow-up, and measuring results, emphasizing his hope that the Economic and Social Council will contribute to advancing Arab economic and social cooperation toward practical and tangible steps that strengthen Arab solidarity and integration. In conclusion, Fahmy expressed his pleasure at participating in the work of the 118th session of the Council, which marks his first since assuming office in early July, and wished success to the Arab efforts aimed at serving the interests of the Arab nation. Kuwait participated in the 118th session meetings with a delegation headed by Saad Al-Alaati, Assistant Undersecretary for Technical Services at the Ministry of Finance, and comprising several ministry officials.
