Arab League Secretary-General welcomes Sudanese national initiative to prepare for a comprehensive dialogue in Sudan
Cairo, Sept 2 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy welcomed on Wednesday a initiative by a group of prominent Sudanese national figures to pave the way for launching a Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue through preliminary consultations with political, civil, and societal forces, aiming to build an atmosphere of trust that would pave the way for a comprehensive dialogue within Sudan.
In a statement, Fahmy also welcomed a decision issued on Tuesday by the Sudanese Sovereignty Council to drop charges and accusations against Sudanese citizens related to their political actions and opinions, and to grant dialogue participants procedural immunity, ensuring that no criminal proceedings would be initiated against them for their political views, thereby guaranteeing their free exercise of dialogue within their country.
He urged Sudanese political, civil, and societal forces to engage in these peaceful consultations, presenting their aspirations, concerns, and peaceful alternatives capable of reaching a minimum level of understanding and guarantees, enabling the launch of a serious and credible dialogue that allows for the broadest possible participation by Sudanese forces.
He emphasized the importance of this national initiative at the current stage, given the interruption of direct political dialogue among the main Sudanese forces and the entrenchment of political divisions in the wake of the war, noting that divergent positions and perspectives regarding the causes of the crisis and ways to resolve it require creating an enabling climate for national dialogue, which is an indispensable necessity with no alternative.
Fahmy expressed his conviction that peaceful political dialogue on Sudan’s future must be exclusively Sudanese, stressing that any sustainable solutions cannot be manufactured on behalf of Sudanese people or imposed on them from outside.
He underscored that the good offices efforts undertaken by the Arab League to bridge differences among political forces would remain supportive of this goal and complementary to it, not a substitute for it. (End) M.M. / M.A.A.
