Russian President confirms that Russia's future lies in the development of the Far East

Moscow, Sept 2 (KUNA) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed today the importance of continuing to develop the Far East as a strategic pillar for his country’s future, emphasizing the need to improve living standards and halt out-migration from the region while launching new projects in transport, industry, and infrastructure. Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin said that Russia’s overall future lies in the development of the Far East, affirming that his country’s plans for the region are “being implemented” and highlighting the importance of providing living conditions that meet contemporary needs for its residents.

In this context, Putin ordered the commencement of construction on the Severomysk-2 tunnel on the Baikal-Amur Mainline railway, a move aimed at enhancing the region’s transport network and rail connectivity, supporting freight movement, and boosting economic development. The Russian president also inaugurated a copper cathode production plant at the Udokan complex, as part of Moscow’s strategy to strengthen the exploitation of natural resources and develop processing industries in the Far East.

Putin stressed that the region’s development is not limited to infrastructure, industries, and economic projects, but also requires the development of the social sector and creative industries to make the Far East an attractive place to live, work, and invest. He noted that previous generations of the Russian people had contributed “bravely” to the development of the Far East, and emphasized the necessity of preventing continued out-migration and creating conditions that encourage citizens to stay in the region and move there.

Regarding living standards, Putin stressed the need for “people to live there in accordance with contemporary conditions,” referring to the importance of keeping pace with economic development by improving services and social and living conditions for residents.

For his part, Yuri Trutnev, the Presidential Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District, briefed Putin on developments in the region, highlighting a revival in shipbuilding, with 31 vessels built over the past four years, as well as increased capacity at seaports in the Far Eastern Federal District.
