Atletico Madrid announces the loan signing of Canadian Jonathan David for one season
Madrid, Sept 1 (KUNA) -- Spanish football club Atletico Madrid announced on Tuesday the loan signing of Canadian striker Jonathan David from Italian side Juventus until the end of the 2026-2027 season. In a statement on its official website, the club confirmed the agreement with the Italian club for the 26-year-old Canadian, adding that he successfully passed his medical examination. Meanwhile, the local sports newspaper Marca reported that Atletico holds an option to buy the player for 25 million euros ($29 million), noting that he is under contract with Juventus until 2030. David joined Juventus in the summer of 2025 on a free transfer from French club Lille, after five seasons in France during which he made 232 appearances and scored 109 goals. However, he managed only eight goals in 46 matches last season for the Italian club. The Canadian striker will join manager Diego Simeone’s attack alongside Argentine Julian Alvarez and Norwegian Alexander Sorloth, in an effort to regain the scoring form he displayed during his years in Ligue 1. On the international stage, David is one of the standout stars of the Canadian national team, topping its all-time scoring list with 42 goals, including three at the 2026 World Cup. (End) H.N.D./R.J.
