British Prime Minister reaffirms his country's solidarity with Germany following a "Russian attack" on Leipzig

London, Sept 1 (KUNA) -- British Prime Minister Andy Burnham affirmed on Tuesday the United Kingdom’s solidarity with Germany following a “Russian attack” on the city of Leipzig. In a statement, Burnham said, “Russia’s attempts to undermine our united resolve and our willingness to support Ukraine are futile and doomed to failure.” He added that “the United Kingdom stands fully with Germany in the wake of the Russian attack on Leipzig, which was heinous and reckless.” He pointed out that “the firm measures taken by the German government demonstrate that any such attack will be met with a resolute response,” reaffirming that “we will not waver in our determination to deter any attacks on our freedom and security.”

Earlier on Tuesday, the German government officially accused Russia of being behind a failed attack attempt using an explosive-laden drone targeting Leipzig/Halle Airport, one of Germany’s and Europe’s most important logistics hubs.

Regarding Berlin’s response to the attack, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadefol announced that Germany would close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn by September 18, cancel the agreement with “Russian House” in Berlin, which serves as a Russian cultural center, and recall the Russian ambassador to Berlin.

Leipzig/Halle Airport holds particular significance, as its role extends beyond civil aviation and commercial cargo to include being a key logistics hub for the transport company DHL. The airport is also used for military transport operations by the German Armed Forces and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Consequently, German authorities view the attempt to target it as a serious security incident that may transcend the scope of conventional attacks on civilian facilities. (End) ash/maw
