Arab Committee to Discuss Developments in the Establishment of the Common Electricity Market
Cairo, Jan 1 (KUNA) -- The committee tasked with studying the comprehensive Arab power grid integration discussed on Tuesday the developments regarding the signing and ratification of the agreements for the Common Arab Electricity Market, with representatives from seven Arab countries participating.
The Arab League stated in a press release that members of the committee, comprising Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, and Tunisia, discussed at their 44th meeting the ratification process for the General Agreement on the Common Arab Electricity Market and the Market Agreement, paving the way for the establishment of a common Arab market that facilitates the trade and exchange of electricity among member states on a regional Arab basis.
The statement emphasized that establishing the Common Arab Electricity Market requires continued coordination and cooperation among Arab countries and regional and international organizations, as well as intensifying joint efforts to enhance energy security in the region. It added that fostering innovation and capacity building would contribute to achieving sustainable development goals and supporting efforts aimed at establishing the Common Arab Electricity Market.
It highlighted the importance of achieving optimal results in electricity supply at the regional level, enabling electricity buyers and sellers to conduct trade operations through fair access to networks and enhancing competition.
According to the statement, the meeting will also explore ways to encourage public and private investments in regional significance electricity generation and transmission projects, and the employment opportunities and sustainable development support they can provide in the Arab region.
It will also review updates on the pilot project for energy exchange between the Mashreq Arab countries—Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt—as a practical step toward achieving regional integration and as a nucleus for initiating commercial electricity exchange among Arab countries on commercial and economic bases.
The Electricity Experts Committee in Arab countries is scheduled to hold its 17th meeting on Wednesday and Thursday, with participation from member Arab countries, alongside the Arab Atomic Energy Agency, the Arab Forum of Electricity Regulators, and the Arab Electricity Union.
The meeting’s agenda includes discussing the possibility of participating in a workshop in collaboration with the Association of Electricity Transmission System Operators of the Mediterranean on data for regional integration and regulatory barriers, as well as proposing the organization of a workshop on the role of the private sector in the energy transition within the common market.
The meeting will also discuss preparations for hosting the 8th Arab Forum on the prospects of electricity generation and seawater desalination using nuclear energy, to explore peaceful applications and modern technological solutions for nuclear energy in addressing water scarcity challenges and meeting the growing demand for energy.
Furthermore, the meeting will explore ways to support the manufacturing of electrical equipment dedicated to the production, transmission, and distribution of electricity in Arab countries, through coordinating the organization of specialized exhibitions that contribute to technology localization, deepening local manufacturing, and enhancing the efficiency of Arab electricity networks.
