(Ministry of Health): (Jaber Hospital) successfully performs a pioneering surgery to repair and replace a prosthetic hip joint using 3D printing
Kuwait City, Jan 9 (KUNA) -- The Ministry of Health announced that a medical team at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital successfully performed a groundbreaking and complex procedure to reconstruct and replace a hip prosthesis using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology for precise, pre-operative planning, marking a new medical achievement that reflects continuous advancements in orthopedic and joint surgeries and the integration of modern technologies in surgical planning.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry said the operation, led by Dr. Hashem Al-Ali, Head of the Orthopedic Surgery Department, was the first of its kind at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital to employ this technology. The 48-year-old patient had suffered a previous hip joint failure and complications resulting from metal deposition and significant bone loss in the pelvis, necessitating advanced surgical planning tailored to the complexity of his condition.
The ministry explained that the medical team utilized computed tomography (CT) scans and 3D printing technology to produce a model identical to the patient’s pelvis prior to the surgery. This allowed for precise examination of areas of bone loss and osseous defects, enabling the determination of the most appropriate surgical approach before the actual intervention.
It added that, based on this pre-operative planning, the team performed an advanced reconstructive procedure that included bone grafting and the use of technology aimed at achieving necessary joint stability and supporting long-term bone integration.
The ministry noted that the surgery was successful, as the patient was able to stand, move, and begin walking on the second day post-operation, indicating a positive sign of early recovery following the surgical intervention.
The ministry emphasized that this achievement reflects the expansion of advanced medical technologies and expertise localization within Kuwait’s healthcare services, as well as the capacity-building of national cadres to manage complex cases and provide specialized care within the country in accordance with the latest medical practices.
