OIC Secretary-General Condemns Military Coup in Niger

Jeddah, August 30 (KUNA) -- The Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, today condemned the unfortunate events and the military rebellion that took place in Niamey, the capital of the Republic of Niger. In a statement, the Secretary-General also condemned all actions that could undermine the security and stability of the Republic of Niger, expressing the Organisation’s full solidarity with the country. He reaffirmed the Organisation’s steadfast position in supporting Niger and its aspiration for security, stability, and development, emphasizing the Organisation’s full readiness to coordinate with regional and international partners to support de-escalation efforts and foster national consensus. Earlier, the Nigerien Ministry of Defence announced yesterday that it had contained a “limited rebellion” that occurred near a military base in the capital, Niamey, and had regained control of sensitive sites targeted by the rebels, confirming that the rebellion had been encircled and prevented from spreading.
