Russia: We will continue to support Niger in its war against extremism

Moscow, August 30 (KUNA) -- The Russian Foreign Ministry affirmed on Sunday that Moscow remains committed to supporting Niger in its fight against extremism, expressing solidarity with the Nigerien people following attacks on government facilities in the capital, Niamey, on Saturday. In a statement, the ministry said, “The Russian side will continue to support its Nigerien friends in their war against extremism,” and wished Niger and the Sahel Alliance, which includes Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, further strengthening of their sovereignty and the achievement of peaceful development. It added that Nigerien national forces repelled attacks launched by anti-government forces on government facilities in Niamey on August 29, with assistance from the African Corps affiliated with the Russian Ministry of Defense. The Nigerien Ministry of Defense had previously announced on Saturday that it had contained a “limited rebellion” that occurred around the 101st Military Base in Niamey, confirming the restoration of control over sensitive sites targeted by the rebels. In a statement signed by Defense Minister General Salifou Mody, the ministry explained that a number of military personnel had detained their colleagues inside the base before opening fire on sensitive locations in the capital. It added that the rapid and coordinated intervention by defense and security forces helped contain the rebellion, prevent its escalation, and gradually restore control over the targeted sites.
