Morocco Emphasizes the Importance of Prevention in Addressing Challenges Related to Security and Peace on the African Continent

Rabat, Aug 29 (KUNA) -- Morocco stressed on Saturday the need to place the concept of prevention at the heart of joint African efforts to address challenges related to security and peace. The Moroccan News Agency reported that this was stated by Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita during the 26th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, held in the Angolan capital, Luanda. He emphasized the importance of “addressing the root causes of conflicts by reinforcing the interlinkage between peace, security, and development at the core of the continent’s preventive approach.”

Bourita clarified that implementing the “Luanda Action Plan” requires enhancing coordination and cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations, making it a guiding principle for continental efforts. He expressed Morocco’s full support for the guidelines and objectives adopted by the session, reaffirming its commitment to the action plan and its implementation matrix, provided that financing mechanisms, procedures, and other relevant aspects are respected.

This extraordinary session, under the theme “Strengthening and Activating the African Peace and Security Architecture,” was convened in implementation of decisions from the 39th Ordinary Summit of the African Union Heads of State and Government, held in February last year. The summit aimed to develop continental mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution, as well as to explore funding avenues.

The session is expected to conclude with the adoption of the Luanda Action Plan and its field implementation mechanisms. (End) M.R.Y./R.J.
