Canadian Prime Minister: We will name Lake Ontario "forever"

Washington, Aug 28 (KUNA) – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his country will keep the name “Lake Ontario” “forever,” in response to an executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump changing the lake’s name to “Lake America.” Carney posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account Thursday evening, “This name dates back more than 400 years, before the founding of the Canadian federation and the declaration of U.S. independence.” He reaffirmed that Canada will continue to call it Lake Ontario “forever,” amid rising tensions between the two neighbors following the collapse of trade talks earlier this week. Trump signed an executive order Thursday officially changing the name of the lake—which is one of North America’s Great Lakes and lies on the border between Canada’s Ontario province and the U.S. state of New York—to “Lake America” within a month.
