Nouakchott: Election of Ould Cheikh Ahmed as Secretary-General of the OIC is a culmination of Mauritania's diplomatic standing

Algiers, Aug 27 (KUNA) -- The Mauritanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday described the unanimous election of former minister Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as a culmination of the status and trust that Mauritania enjoys as a result of its “moderate and balanced” diplomatic approach.

In a statement, the ministry expressed its pride in the consensus of member states on the election of its candidate during the 23rd extraordinary session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, held in Jeddah today. It noted that “this success adds to the gains achieved by Mauritanian diplomacy in recent years and underscores the firm standing of Mauritania, its growing presence, and its credibility at both the regional and international levels.”

The ministry expressed its “deep appreciation” to member states for their support and confidence in its candidate, which reaffirms Mauritania’s standing within the Islamic sphere and the esteem accorded to its role in serving the causes of the Ummah and enhancing solidarity and joint Islamic action.

The ministry congratulated the newly elected Secretary-General, Ould Cheikh Ahmed, wishing him every success in carrying out his duties in service of member states, strengthening the unity, effectiveness, and advocacy for the causes of the Islamic Ummah and the interests of its peoples.

Ould Cheikh Ahmed was elected Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation by consensus of member states during the 23rd extraordinary session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, held earlier today in Jeddah. (End) M.R. / M.A.A.
