(UNIFIL): UN Security Council Resolution 1701 "the basic framework" for achieving stability in southern Lebanon

Beirut, August 27 (KUNA) -- The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) confirmed on Thursday that United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 “remains the fundamental framework for achieving stability in southern Lebanon.” In a statement, UNIFIL said that the principles underpinning Resolution 1701 include respect for the Blue Line, cessation of hostilities, withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from Lebanese territory, and the extension of the authority of the Lebanese state over its entire territory. The statement added that the role of the international force is to support both the Lebanese and Israeli sides in fulfilling their obligations under the international resolution, alongside monitoring developments on the ground, reporting violations, and supporting the Lebanese Army and local communities in southern Lebanon. It stressed that full implementation of international Resolution 1701 “ultimately depends on the commitment of both parties” along the shared border, noting that the purpose of the long-term presence of the international force is “clear and consists in achieving sustainable stability and security, thereby enabling civilians to return safely to their homes.” Southern Lebanon has been witnessing continuous military and field escalation amid escalating violations and clashes along the southern border since March 2, resulting in hundreds of casualties, the displacement of thousands of residents from border villages and towns, and severe damage to infrastructure and property.
