Kuwait City, Aug 27 (KUNA) -- August 27 ------------------------ 1963 - Mikhail Gerkasov presented his credentials to Kuwait’s Amir, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, as the first Soviet Union ambassador to Kuwait. 1995 - Kuwait celebrated the raising of the Kuwaiti and United Nations flags at the former “Al-Ossam” roundabout as part of the country’s celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the international organization. 2001 - UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Dr. Ghanim Al-Najjar, a political science professor at Kuwait University, as his personal representative to follow up on the human rights situation in Somalia. 2001 - Hamad Mubarak Al-Haim passed away at the age of 78; he was one of the most prominent figures in the call to Islam over a period of 35 years. 2005 - Kuwait’s Amir, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, issued a decree approving the Copenhagen Declaration on Combating Drug Abuse in Sports. 2017 - The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research announced that it had obtained a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a “system for measuring the glass transition of polymers.” 2023 - Kuwaiti rally driver Mishaal Al-Dhafiri secured first place in the overall standings of the T3 category during the fifth round of the World Desert Rally Championship (Baja Rally) in Poland. 2023 - Sheikh Khaled Gharib Al-Saedi, imam and preacher at Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Mosque and imam of the Great State Mosque, passed away at the age of 58. 2023 - Poet and lyricist Yousif Nasser Al-Masfar passed away at the age of 80, after a life rich with contributions to Kuwaiti musical culture. 2025 - The Ministry of Interior announced the dispatch of the first group of Kuwaiti female personnel to join the Royal Navy College in the United Kingdom.
