Washington, August 25 (KUNA) -- Texas authorities confirmed on Tuesday that wildfires that broke out in the state’s central region yesterday have expanded to consume 50,000 acres (approximately 203 square kilometers), triggering large-scale evacuations across dozens of counties. The Texas Forest Service stated on the social media platform X that “evacuations are underway as the Ross Fire in Texas spreads rapidly across 50,000 acres, with only 5 percent containment.” Authorities added that the fire was first reported on August 24, 2026, and has shown significant growth, expanding from 25 acres to 7,000 acres in roughly one day. They noted that the fire poses a high risk of further expansion and spread, driven by the severe drought currently affecting the region, and urged residents to stay informed about wildfire risks, heed local officials’ instructions, and immediately report any smoke or fire. Authorities warned that, given dry soil and high temperatures, the fire could engulf 20, 30, or even 40 acres within minutes, posing serious threats to homes, agricultural land, roads, and emergency response teams. They also noted that nearly 200 counties across Texas and Oklahoma are currently under burn bans, as the combination of drought, extreme heat, and dry vegetation keeps wildfire risks high.
