Russia and the Vatican discuss ways to resolve the Ukrainian crisis and continue diplomatic dialogue

Moscow, August 25 (KUNA) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Paul Gallagher discussed on Tuesday in Moscow ways to resolve the Ukrainian crisis and related humanitarian issues, emphasizing the importance of continuing dialogue and maintaining diplomatic channels between the two sides.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Lavrov expressed Moscow’s gratitude for the Vatican’s “balanced” positions on the Ukrainian crisis, reaffirming Russia’s commitment to continuing cooperation with the Vatican on issues related to the situation in Ukraine. Lavrov clarified that Moscow is ready to resume political consultations and operational work between the Russian and Vatican foreign ministries, which would enhance communication between the two sides on matters of mutual interest.

For his part, Gallagher stressed, according to the statement, the necessity of continuing dialogue despite the challenges, as it is a means to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. He added that the continuation of the war in Ukraine leads to further casualties and makes future reconciliation more difficult. Gallagher called for an end to the conflict and for looking beyond it, reiterating the Vatican’s continued support for diplomatic and humanitarian efforts aimed at creating space for dialogue.
