Egyptian Foreign Minister stresses the necessity of preserving the unity of Gaza and the West Bank
Cairo, Aug 25 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, emphasized the necessity of preserving the unity of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and of creating a serious political horizon that leads to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement on Tuesday that this position was expressed during a meeting held by Abdelatty with Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh, attended by Palestinian National Council Chairman Rami Hamdallah and Fatah Central Committee member Majed Faraj, as part of continuous communication and consultation regarding developments in the Palestinian cause and efforts to support the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
The statement clarified that the meeting addressed the catastrophic current situation in the Gaza Strip resulting from inhumane Israeli practices there, and the paramount importance of the international community pressuring the Israeli occupation to fulfill its commitments under the peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump. This includes the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid and the implementation of withdrawals from the Gaza Strip, paving the way for the Palestinian Authority to resume its full responsibilities in the Gaza Strip.
The statement added that the meeting also discussed serious developments in the West Bank, characterized by daily and systematic attacks by settlers against innocent Palestinian civilians, as well as the continuous expansion of illegal and unlawful settlement activities and ongoing violations of Christian and Islamic holy sites in East Jerusalem.
The meeting also covered efforts to achieve Palestinian reconciliation and restore Palestinian unity, as well as the continuation of the ongoing political reform process.
According to the statement, Abdelatty renewed Egypt’s full condemnation and absolute, unequivocal rejection of all illegal Israeli measures aimed at imposing a new reality on the ground or undermining the unity of Palestinian territories.
The statement noted that the Palestinian Vice President and the accompanying delegation expressed deep appreciation for Egypt’s pivotal role in supporting the Palestinian cause and defending the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
In this context, they commended the efforts and communications undertaken by Egypt to halt escalation, promote the implementation of the peace plan, and support the Palestinian Authority, emphasizing the importance of continuing close coordination and consultation with Egypt in the coming phase.
