UK and Ukraine sign pioneering agreement to develop military AI technologies

London, August 24 (KUNA) -- The United Kingdom and Ukraine signed a pioneering artificial intelligence (AI) agreement today, Monday, aimed at enhancing the military and technological capabilities of both countries, including drone, robotics, and autonomous systems technologies. The agreement will grant the UK access to Ukraine’s “Avengers” AI laboratories database, which provides field data and insights for training AI models, collected by thousands of cameras and day and infrared sensors deployed on the battlefield in Ukraine.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said in a statement that the partnership would combine Ukrainian operational expertise with British AI systems, contributing to the development of future technologies that enhance security and save lives on the battlefield. He added that combining Ukrainian battlefield data with British expertise would accelerate the development of capabilities that strengthen national security, protect critical infrastructure, and support growth in the UK.

According to the British government, the agreement will enable the launch of several experimental technology projects in the UK, alongside defense projects aimed at protecting military bases from hostile entities and obtaining intelligence. The agreement will also strengthen cooperation between the two countries in developing next-generation low-power AI chips to power drones, robots, and autonomous systems.

The UK and Ukraine simultaneously issued a joint declaration of intent on AI partnership, reaffirming their political commitment to developing AI-enabled military capabilities through government, industry, and academic collaboration. The partnership focuses on safe innovation, interoperability with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the implementation of pilot projects to accelerate the deployment of capabilities.
