International Maritime Organization calls for the release of 90 seafarers kidnapped in the Gulf of Aden

London, August 24 (KUNA) -- The International Maritime Organization (IMO) called on Monday for the immediate release of 90 seafarers kidnapped in piracy incidents in the waters of the Gulf of Aden. In a statement, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said, “More than 90 innocent seafarers are currently being held, their lives facing continuous danger and uncertainty. I call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.” He added, “Challenges to maritime navigation are increasing, with a recent rise in piracy incidents in the Gulf of Aden. With the latest kidnapping, a sixth vessel is now held by pirates and armed robbers in waters that have become extremely dangerous for seafarers.” He continued, “While international attention is turning to other areas experiencing escalating tensions, we cannot allow piracy to return to the Gulf of Aden and its surrounding waters without addressing the issue.” The IMO issued this statement following reports of the hijacking of the oil tanker Simul on August 20. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the Simul was rerouted toward Somalia after being taken over by six armed men off the coast of Yemen. (End)
