Cairo, Aug 24 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr. Badr Abdelatty held a telephone conversation with Mas’ad Paul, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President for Arab and African Affairs, to discuss regional developments, foremost among them the latest developments in Sudan, the Horn of Africa, and Libya.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday that the call addressed efforts to halt escalation in Sudan, where Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s firm stance supporting Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as the preservation of its national institutions.
According to the statement, the call also covered developments in the Horn of Africa region, where Abdelatty stressed the necessity of respecting the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the countries in the region, and refraining from any unilateral moves that could threaten regional peace and security or seek to impose maritime access by force in violation of international law.
Regarding the Libyan issue, the two sides exchanged views on current developments and efforts to advance the political process, according to the statement. The Egyptian Foreign Minister reiterated his country’s firm position supporting Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and emphasized the need to preserve the unity of its national institutions and move forward toward a comprehensive political settlement through a Libyan-led process that leads to the simultaneous holding of presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible, thereby ending the state of division and meeting the Libyan people’s aspirations for security and stability.
The statement said that Paul, for his part, expressed gratitude for Egypt’s constructive efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region and unify Libyan institutions. He added that both sides stressed the importance of continuing coordination and consultation regarding developments in Sudan, Libya, and the Horn of Africa, and intensifying regional and international efforts aimed at supporting political and diplomatic solutions to crises, thereby contributing to enhancing security and stability across the African continent.
