Egypt and India affirm the importance of intensifying diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region

Cairo, August 23 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty and his Indian counterpart, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, emphasized the importance of intensifying diplomatic efforts and supporting political solutions to de-escalate tensions in the region. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Sunday that the two ministers discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations and developments on regional and international issues of mutual interest during a telephone conversation. The statement added that the ministers exchanged views on regional developments and the future of regional security arrangements in light of the rapid changes the region is witnessing. According to the statement, the Egyptian foreign minister stressed the importance of avoiding military escalation, prioritizing the diplomatic track, and ensuring freedom of navigation. Regarding Egyptian-Indian relations, he praised the notable progress witnessed in recent years, reaffirming the commitment to continue strengthening the strategic partnership launched in 2023 to serve the interests of both peoples. Abdelatty also commended the outcomes of the first round of the strategic dialogue between the foreign ministers of the two countries, held in New Delhi in October 2025, emphasizing the importance of building on the results of this round and maintaining the “positive” momentum characterizing bilateral relations by intensifying high-level visits and ensuring regular meetings of consultation mechanisms between the two countries. In this regard, he affirmed Egypt’s interest in expanding cooperation with India in the fields of economy, trade, and investment, and working to raise the volume of bilateral trade to reach $12 billion over the next five years.
